Free day parking Okeechobee, FL. I only stayed at Port Mayaca in the day. I did not see any no overnight parking signs. There is plenty of room either by the water or under the bridge.
The internet service is poor and there are no facilities. This is a popular place for travelers to stop and enjoy the view before continuing on their journey. It is peaceful despite being right along rte 98. There is a paved bike path which extends through several towns along the lake. There is a section where you can drive up to the water relax or fish.
The name Port Mayaca is derived from the Native American Seminole word “Mayaca,” which means “big water.” The area has a rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times when Native Americans inhabited the region. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Port Mayaca served as an important transportation hub for the region.
The town was situated at the northern end of the Lake Okeechobee waterway, which connected the lake to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lucie River. Boats carrying agricultural goods, such as sugarcane and citrus, could transport their goods to Port Mayaca, where they could then be transported by rail to other parts of the country. In 1928, Port Mayaca was hit hard by the Great Okeechobee Hurricane, which caused massive flooding and destruction throughout the region. Many of the town’s buildings were destroyed, and the local economy suffered greatly.
Today, Port Mayaca is popular with fishermen and boaters, who come to enjoy the abundant fishing and recreational opportunities offered by Lake Okeechobee.
