The last two days have been a crazy whirlwind of flying out, picking up my van and driving back. I wanted to share about insuring your van and some lessons learned.
If getting a van then building it out you get one insurance policy for the van alone and after the build the van out you need to get a different policy. (This is for of you are financing the van) More on that process in the future. One note on that is track Everything in your build as you build.
Depending on the type of van you get it can be considered a commercial van. There are lots of rules around this depending on the insurance company. What I ran into was the van was built with no windows on the side or in the back.
Some companies will not allow you to personally insure the van. You would need to be using it for business. This is expensive and not needed. Don’t fall for all that even if you have a side gig unless you can do it as a write off in your business.
How you word what you are using the van for is really important. Less is better – “using it for personal everyday use”. Even though you need to reclassify and reinsurance your van after the build – Some companies will not insure the first portion.
Giving the Vin number when getting the different quotes works out majority of the kinks. Being part of some vanlife communities is a helpful source of information. Ultimately, this is where I found an insurance company which worked for me. Several people suggested Geico – score!
